It has been several weeks since we made those New Year's Resolutions for 2012. Many people resolved to lose weight or work out, but now is about the time where those resolutions fall by the wayside. Life happens... We fall into old habits and make excuses for giving up on our goals. Does this sound familiar? There are so many obstacles that we all must overcome to achieve our goals. The biggest obstacle is ourselves. We can truly be our own worst enemy. There are several reasons why people give up. Let's take a look at a few of the most common excuses:
"I don't have time."
Many of us are busy with family, work, relationships. We give to others 24-7 and simply don't leave room in the schedule for ourselves. The problem with doing this is that when we don't take time for ourselves, we are not giving our best self to those around us. We are often tired, irritable and frustrated because there is a part of us that is unfulfilled. The first step to overcoming this excuse is to realize that taking that time to develop our personal spiritual, mental and physical wellness will allow us to be the best version of our self to serve those around us.
"I am too tired."
The truth here is that being too tired is directly linked with not taking care of yourself. If you make positive changes in your health, you will quickly see that your energy levels increase. It's like a race car, in order for optimum performance you use the best fuel available and do all of the necessary maintenance. The same is true for our bodies. Consuming nutrient rich foods and regular physical activity are going to keep our bodies performing at their optimum level. Optimum performance = more energy.
"My kids get in the way."
There are many ways to incorporate kids into your activity plans. Many gyms offer childcare, but there are also all kinds of activities that you can do with your kids and families - play outside, go for a walk, have a family dance party. When it comes to healthy eating, many people use their kids as an excuse as well. Often kids and other family members will welcome new healthy options, although it may be best not to tell them what you are trying to do. There are so many creative recipes that all will enjoy. Allow your kids to help. Sometimes just involving them in the planning and preparing can get them excited about new options.
"It's boring."
Whether you find exercise or healthy eats "boring", you are not alone. This is a common complaint. The trick is finding activity and foods that you love. It may take you a little while to find it, but it is worth it when you do! Try new activities - walking, group exercise classes, gardening, dance, etc. Go with a friend or family member. When it comes to eating healthy, try new recipes. Health food doesn't have to be bland and boring! Use seasonings and spices. Take your existing recipes and alter them to use healthier ingredients. For example, if a recipe calls for cheese, use a fat free or low fat substitution.
The excuses are endless. But in 2012 resolve to beat the excuses! Be persistent and push through! Create new lifelong habits for yourself! YES!!!YOU!!!CAN!!!!
