We're taking stories from real gals on their real journeys of putting a new body and lifestyle in place. Several times a month we'll share these stories and share the why, challenges, and encouragement that each gal has to offer. Interested in sharing your story? Meet Sarah Fullam!
What were your old
habits, lifestyle?
Over the
course of 2008-2010 there had been a lot of changes in my life, some good, some
challenging. I definitely had gotten into a pattern of an extremely sedentary
lifestyle, taking care of everyone but myself. I also was doing a fair amount
of emotional eating, eating to fill spaces in other parts of myself. I also had
a fair amount of “eyes bigger than my stomach” syndrome—where I was eating
portions far beyond what I needed, and what my stomach could hold. I felt
bloated and sluggish most of the time, and most definitely not happy with
myself.
Why did you make the
change?
As New
Year’s Eve 2010 was approaching, I just knew that something had to change in
2011. So, as I was sitting, trying to think of what my resolutions for 2011
should be… the first thing I though was “I have got to start taking care of
myself and doing something selfish for me.” (although the Fit Gals don't think that's selfish!!)
What program or plans
did you use and follow?
I’ve been on Weight Watchers
since New Year’s Eve 2010. For me, it feels like the most workable plan I’ve
ever tried, and the only one where I didn’t feel starving all the time. It also
focuses so much on the building blocks of what makes a healthy lifestyle for
LIFE, which was what I needed. I didn’t need a quick fix—I needed something I
could do for the rest of my life.
What are your new
habits, lifestyle, routines for diet and exercise?
For me, the biggest change in my habits, lifestyle and
routine has been that I actually have an exercise routine—and that working out
has truly become a part of my daily life (so much so that I physically feel it
if I miss a day) and a total lifestyle. For me what has worked best is
switching up my activities as well as finding workouts that are fun as well a
good workout. Zumba fits this bill to a T. I do Zumba about three times a
week—and for me it’s so much fun, that it’s more like dancing with my friends
than working out. The hour flies—and it’s done wonders for my toning and
overall physical endurance.
Diet wise—biggest changes have been cutting out most carbs
(unless they are whole grain), and truly planning my meals. I set out a plan
for dinners each night—which helps to keep me on plan, as well as take away the
“what the heck are we going to have for dinner” conversation. I come home, and
I already know what I need to make. Simplifying my life in that way has reduced
my stress—and my waistline!
What was/is the
hardest part of your journey?
For me, the most difficult part of the journey is what I am
going through right now. I am about five pounds from goal and those last couple
of pounds truly are fighting me with everything they have! I had settled into a
very workable routine with exercise and diet—but I came to the hard realization
that I was going to have to make further changes and cuts to my diet and
workout routine to make the changes necessary to lose the last five pounds and
keep them off. It’s hard after you’ve set up a habit that has worked for the
last six months to make even more changes. I’m seeing some success—but with any
change it’s been tough to stick to. I know I’ll make it though!!!
What are your results,
inside and out?
Most people comment on the physical outward changes through
my journey—and those are important and noteworthy—but I’m most proud of the
inward changes I’ve made.
Since New Year’s 2010 I’ve lost nearly 82 pounds and 4
dress sizes. I am the weight I was at my sophomore year of high school, and in
better shape than I’ve been in nearly 15 years (when I was a competitive swimmer).
But what I value more is the inward changes—I am much more confident than I
have been in a long time. I truly believe with all my heart that I can do
anything I put my mind to. I’ve developed new passions—which enrich my life and
allow me to be more to those around me. Finally, I truly love myself… flaws and
all.
What would you say to encourage other gals that read this?
Believe in yourself. Value yourself. Put yourself first, at least occasionally. You are definitely worth investing in yourself and your health—and to do so is not selfish. Also, give yourself credit for your successes—if you don’t toot your own horn, who else would?? Best of luck to all of you!!! We all have to start somewhere!!
.......and
to that we say:
Congrats Sarah on going after the change you desired! You embraced the truth and benefits of setting new habits and have shown us all how those can really pay off! We love your energy and the new you that has evolved, inside AND out! Thank you for sharing your story!
